Supernatural returns for its fourth season as Sam and Dean Winchester (Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles) continue their trek across the country investigating paranormal activities and warding off evil denizens of the netherworlds. Season 3 ended with Dean being sent to Hell as he is forced to fulfill the contract he made at the end of Season 2. As Season 4 opens, though, Dean will have returned to Earth with no knowledge of where he has been or what happened to him. The season will begin four months after the events that occurred at the end of last season and will track the events that occurred during that time as Dean starts to learn what happened to him in Hell and as learns how Sam fared on his own. Series creator Eric Kripke has also promised to deliver a homage to 1930’s horror movies and a bloody Halloween special this season.
I have tuned into Supernatural on an infrequent basis and found it mildly interesting. I got slammed last season, though, for saying that Reaper was a much better show. Maybe I will have to tune in on a more regular basis this year to see if there is something I am missing.

One of the great pleasures of Supernatural is that almost all the episodes are entertaining, funny/scary stand-alones. But the story-of-the-week isn't what has hooked so many otherwise rational (ahem) people into passionate fandom. It will be interesting to see what a previously casual viewer like you makes of the show's subtler qualities without trying to catch up with the previous three seasons.
