Lost returns for its fifth, and second to last, season on January 21st with seventeen episodes planned to run consecutively over sixteen weeks with no breaks. We left our favorite castaways at the end of Season 4 with the “Oceanic Six”, who had escaped from the island, determined to make their way back. This of course will prove difficult as the island disappeared and the end of the last episode.
Co-creator and executive producer Carlton Cuse has assured us that the show, which continues to re-invent itself each year, will once again push the boundaries and explore new territory in Season 5. He has also promised that many answers will be revealed (don’t they promise that each year) including the fate of Jin, Claire, and Michael, along with the return to previous loose ends such as the enormous four-towed statues that we saw at the end of Season 2. He has also said that they will continue to use the flashbacks and flash-forwards, though fewer than previous seasons because they will explore some other transition techniques as well (for more, read Part 1 and Part 2 of Cuse’s interview with Sci Fi Wire).
The series will return to the Wednesday 9 PM EST timeslot that it held during Season 2 and part of Season 3 and it will be followed by Life on Mars at 10 PM (which should make for a good pairing). The three hour January 21st premiere will consist of a clip show and two new episodes running back to back. I look forward to this series each season as it has consistently delivered engaging stories and constantly throws unexpected twists at us. Season 5 will provide the ramp up for show’s grand finale which will unfold over seventeen episodes during its sixth and last season.
